Setting A Tag Repository on a Site

documentation for the dotCMS Content Management System

The Tag Storage field on the Site specifies where Tags for content on that Site are stored. The Tag Storage value determines both where newly created Tags are stored, and which Tags are suggested to a content contributor when they begin typing in the Tags field of any content item in the content editing screen.

  • When a content contributor adds new Tags to a piece of content on a given Site, those Tags will be stored wherever the Tag Storage value is set for that Site.
  • When a content contributor types into the Tags field of the content editing screen, they will be presented with Tag suggestions from both the Site specified in the Tag Storage value for their current Site and Tags stored in “All Hosts”.

You may configure the Tag Storage value to either a specific Site or to “All Hosts”.

  • When you select a specific Site (including the Site itself) for the Tag Storage value, all Tags for the Site are shared with the selected Site and any other Sites with a Tag Storage value set to the same specific Site.
  • When you select “All Hosts” for the Tag Storage value, all Tags for the Site are shared with all Sites on the same dotCMS instance.

There are three basic ways to configure the Tag Storage for a Site:

Tag Storage SelectionSites Tags are Shared With
The Site itselfNone, unless another Site has configured its Tag Storage value to this Site.
Another specific SiteThe specified Site and any other Sites which have also configured the Tag Storage value to the same specific Site.
“All Hosts”All other Sites on the same dotCMS instance.
